Child and Adolescent Orthodontics

Identifying and correcting orthodontic malocclusions early in children and adolescents can promote a better psychological mindset and obtain better alignment of the teeth and jaws. Orthodontics in these young individuals is aimed at correcting functional bite problems, improving chewing/speaking and enhancing facial aesthetics. Correction of these issues early can prevent more serious problems later in life. Orthodontic treatment at this stage can address habits like thumb sucking, maintaining/create space for permanent teeth to erupt properly, etc. Other common issues that can occur include open bite, protruding teeth, crossbites, altered pattern in the eruption sequence of teeth, impacted canines, crowding, spacing, etc.

Since these individuals are still growing it is easier to harness growth to guide teeth into the desired positions. Early orthodontic intervention can sometimes prevent extractions that may need to be performed, should the patient be seen later or is left untreated. Aligning teeth in young people does boost their confidence and makes it easier to clean their mouth. Some types of treatments at this age would include braces, removable orthodontic functional appliances, headgear, mini-screws, etc.
