Orthodontic retainers are used after active orthodontic treatment is completed to keep teeth in their new positions. There are different types of retainers like fixed/bonded or removable retainers. Fixed/bonded retainers are a thin wire bonded to the back surfaces of anterior teeth. Removable retainers are custom-made appliances that can be taken in and out of the mouth. It is either clear plastic trays or acrylic appliances. Retainers stabilise teeth as teeth has a tendency to shift after orthodontic treatment is completed. Depending on the complexity of the malocclusion different types of retainers may be used. It is important to wear the removable retainer as instructed and regularly monitor the condition of the fixed/bonded retainer. It is also important to clean the retainers to maintain good oral hygiene.
