Skeletal anchorage refers to the use of mini-implants/screws or bone plates that are inserted into the bone to provide an anchor point to allow for tooth movements. These devices are often called temporary anchorage devices (TAD’s) and are surgically inserted into the maxilla or mandible. Elastics or springs are then attached to these devices and to the braces to effect the desired tooth movements. In complex orthodontic cases TAD’s may be needed when the desired tooth movement is difficult to achieve by traditional ways. Skeletal anchorage offers greater precision, control and unwanted reciprocal tooth movements to the other teeth. Once orthodontic treatment is completed, these devices are then removed. Using these techniques reduces the need for headgear. Skeletal anchorage is used for closing spaces between teeth, intruding over-erupted teeth, correcting open bites, moving molars without affecting other teeth, etc. This procedure requires minor oral surgery to be performed under local anaesthesia.
